Cheers to you!

I renamed the Drinkers Mitts: Cheers to You! Mitts

I really enjoyed knitting these.  The only issue was finding the right (or close enough) colors in my stash.  Most of the yarn is Knit Picks Stroll fingering weight yarn.  The beer mugs at the top are knit from an acrylic yarn that just didn’t seem to get along with the wool blend after blocking the mitts and want to recede into the background.  My ribbing isn’t as nice as I wish.

My friend liked them.  A lot.  I wish I would have gotten a picture of her modeling them.  But alas I didn’t.

Apart from the background color change, the Cosmopolitan drink (?) is now a Margarita as the pink I had didn’t go with the red.  If I make these again, I would add a row or two of plain knitting between the beer mugs and the ribbing.  Maybe it was using two different yarns (acrylic and wool) that caused the less than perfect transition.

A quick, little knit

I needed a quick gift.

So I whipped this up one afternoon.

Wine-sock-4

It started out as plain red then I got bored so added the blue.

Wine-sock-1

Firecracker heather and Midnight heather (a deep blue).

Wine-sock-5

Kind of reminds me of The Cat in the Hat.

Cat-in-the-Hat

Perfect to catch those nasty drips on the wine bottle.

Happy 90th Birthday!

My aunt had a milestone birthday last month and I sent her a goodie box filled with fruits, muffins, breads, and a special handmade gift.

Her iPad has a factory Smart Cover to protect it but when she takes it out of the house she doesn’t have any way to carry it except in a way-too-large tote bag.

And since I am on this sewing and quilting kick, I sewed and quilted one for her.

002-FrontIn red and purple.

006-Open-frontTwo of her favorite colors.

007-Open-backWith a bit of pink since that was what I had in my stash.

012-close-up-2The darker red is actually part of a skirt I had that I ripped apart.

014-stitch-in-the-ditch-2The closure is actually two buttons sewn on together.

003-ButtonThe strap is padded with a couple of layers of quilt batting as most tablets have a bit of weight to them and I wanted it comfortable enough to carry over a wrist or in the hand.

010-side-2It’s just machine quilted in a grid.

011-close-up-1

004-front

008-closed-backLined with red cotton and light blue flannel (because that’s what I had).

016-inside-1I schootched the lining out a bit before I top stitched around the edge so it almost looks like piping.

005-open-front

To be totally truthful…this is the second one I made for her.  The first one fit my iPad but not hers as her Smart Cover adds an inch or so to the overall size.  My sister took the smaller one for her tablet so it all worked out.

Felt ornaments

I made some felt ornaments a few weeks ago and never posted much (if anything) about them.  They are a bit puffy with some fiberfill but not too much, just enough to give them some dimension.

First up is the tree:

Trees

They look a bit blue but are really two shades of green, some coordinating floss and a few buttons.

Second, holly leaves and berries:

Holly

Same two colors of green, coordinating floss and some red pom poms.  I decided to machine stitch the lighter green instead of stem stitch as my stem stitch isn’t very good.  The pom poms were glued on.  You can see the glue but it did dry clear.  I’m thinking I should have secured them with a few stitches.  Time will tell if I need to do that.

Last are my favorite little birds:

I used to paint wooden ones and sell them though they had a bit more detail.  If I still have some left, I can show you my inspiration for the felt version.

The tree is the largest at about 4-5 inches tall.  The best thing is that they are unbreakable.  Perfect for curious little hands.
