Secret project #1 finished

Here is my first secret project.  These are in the mail and I don’t think my friend reads this blog. 

Purple and variegated

 

I used acrylic yarn and attached soles made from leftover scraps of “replacement” carpet used in Mr. Aitch’s truck.  I got the carpet from a Big Box store and it is thin enough to cut with regular scissors, to sew with regular needle and thread without hurting the hands, and wears very well.

I have tried using wools and acrylic yarn and I don’t notice a difference in wear so I used what I had.  I did knit a pair for Mr. Aitch with one strand of acrylic and one strand of wool and hemp blend.  He hasn’t worn them yet and I am curious how the hemp will hold up. 

I L.O.V.E. this pattern.  It is seamless.  I used two worsted weights yarns held together and size US 9 needles since that’s what I had available.  I usually use US 8 needles but they were in some other UFO.  The only other modification I do is repeat Rows 3-6 one more time so I have 13 stitches.  I pick up 11 stitches on each side.  I don’t like short sides as they seem to fall off my feet.  By doing this, I change the total stitch count.  I’ll write it up and post it in my pattern tab.  The pom poms are a bit thin as I ran out of yarn.  Plus it’s been ages since I made pom poms and forgot how much yarn they use! 

My grandmother made similar slippers but they were flat and you had to sew the back and top seams.  And since I’m all about no seaming, these were perfect.

I decided to frog te Swiffer cover I knit over the weekend.  I pushed it into the grabbers and it grabbed it alright.  I will find another pattern so it slips over the ends and not into the grabbers.  Do you have a favorite Swiffer cover pattern?  Please leave a comment or link.

I knit to get a finished object but this froggy knitting did give me a chance to perfect my seed stitch.  I love its nubby texture.

Almost finished with the first secret project.  I spent a large part of last night trying to find the last bit that I needed to sew on.  I really, really, REALLY need to organize my yarn stash and supplies.  Waiting until I finish part of the basement is just too long of a wait.  I will be posting for help on this at a later date so start thinking of how you organize your supplies and yarn.

I’m going to call (as soon as the store opens) for an update on my computer.   No computer = more knitting time.  This has given me new insight into what emails I keep and what I delete.  I usually keep most of them except for advertisements.  With a poor memory like mine I need to reread a lot of correspondence.  My on-line Inbox is really full and I should decide what is important.

Sorry, not photos today of my progress.

Only four more rows to knit on the first MICH mittens.  Then it’s onto the thumb and conversion to a flip top.

Saturday night I knit a Swiffer duster cover from Crazy Aunt Purl’s book Home is Where the Wine Is. using Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in lime green.  I think it is just flat and pushes down into the “grabbers” on the top of the Swiffer.  I haven’t used it yet but I’m wondering if the “grabbers” will tear my cover.  Testing and report due at a later date.  (Like once I get my computer back and in working order.)

Sunday I made half of a secret project for a friend whose birthday was at the end of July.  We met for brunch yesterday and told her I was making something for her and as soon as I finished it, I would send it to her.  I worked on it last night and it’s almost finished now.  I will take pictures before I send it to her.

My computer is in the computer hospital hoping to make a full recovery.  Unfortunately this recovery won’t be until sometime next week.  More like Thursday.  The computer doctor said he can get all my data and email addresses and messages so not all is lost.  I just feel lost. 

I tried to use an old laptop last night.  It took F.O.R.E.V.E.R. to boot up.  It uses Windows 98.  Yes, 98.  That’s 12 years old or 120 in computer years. 

So I used Mr. Aitch’s computer while he was out.  He doesn’t have all the crafty sites bookmarked and it took me awhile to find some things.  Like my blog.  Funny how we get used to shortcuts and forget how to do something the “normal” way.  I used to type in everyone’s email address instead of using an address book.  So now I can’t remember anyone’s address.  Same with phone numbers. 

Enough lamenting. 

Toddlers and dogs are coming today.  I managed to get most of the stuff out of reach.  Unfortunately it’s not out of sight.  Good intentions. 

I do have two pictures from my phone on the progress of the Ms Ida Chain Link mittens.  I decided to make them flip top mittens so you can see the gold yarn where that slit will be.

I would be a terrible test knitter as I usually alter a pattern. 

I won’t be ignoring you.  I just won’t be able to do much on-line until I get my computer back.  Maybe Mr. Aitch will share.
