Usefulness

I’ve had a couple of people ask me what is the use of fingerless mitts.

Mitts-for-Pat-2

Having fingers exposed allows one to use their fingers while keeping the rest of their han and wrist warm.  Think of buttoning you child’s coat or tieing their shoes when it’s cold outside.  Feeling for something (keys, lip gloss, tissues, gum) in your purse without taking your gloves or mittens off.  Answering your cell phone or texting.  Buckling your child into a car seat when it’s c-o-l-d outside.  Typing, filing, taking notes in a cold classroom or office.

The difference between fingerless mitts and fingerless gloves is (IMHO) is that fingerless mitts just end so the fingers are free while fingerless gloves have topless fingers.

I’ve made a combination of fingerless gloves and mittens once for a friend who loves to take photographs on the C&O Canal towpath in our area.  Ever try to take a picture with gloves on?  The pattern is called “Glittens” by Nuttinbutknittin.

On the other hand (no pun intended) many pairs of fingerless mitts have come off my knitting needles.

Fingerless mitts for ME!

Have you made or own any fingerless mitts or gloves?

Do you find them useful?

In between

Now that the Christmas rush is over and the gifts are finished, I find myself between projects.

I finally made a pair of fingerless mitts for me using Shirl’s Mittlets pattern and Cascade 220 Paints in Cherry Berry.

The colors match my winter coat and felted purse.

The only thing left in my UFO (unfinished objects) pile is a scarf that I’ve been working on for over a year.

I’m really not in a big hurry to finish it at all.

I have the yarn to make another one of these hats.

I love this hat and it is the warmest hat I’ve ever had.  It even keeps my ears warm and that’s a big plus for me.  And even though the colors are perfect, the hat does not “go” with my everyday winter coat.  The colors do coordinate with my “dress” coat.  The yarn I have is red and grey.  Do you detect a theme here???

There are some sewing projects I would like to tackle, some organizing and reorganizing projects, some decorating projects, some painting projects, and some knitting projects.

Our daughter is expecting next month so the twins will be getting a baby brother.  I’ve helped our daughter get the nursery ready over several weekends in November.  But I don’t have any baby knitting done.  That might be the next project.

I think I’m safe

I’m pretty sure no one from work reads this blog so I think I’m safe sharing what I have done so far on my office Christmas knitting.

My plan was to knit mitts that coordinate with these hats that I made last year.

Office hats

I still have one navy mitt to knit then another pair to coordinate with the striped hat in the upper left.  I’m not sure how I want to do that final pair.  These are knit in the round so any colorwork will also go around.  Maybe bold stripes around the main hand part?

There are still ends to weave in but I’m making headway.

10 day work week

This week seemed like it was 10 days long.

Yay!

I had a lot of hurry-up-and-wait stuff going on at work this week.  I had to put together 10 binders of materials for a meeting Wednesday evening I was not attending.  Most of the documents needed updating and I had to wait for those to be done before I could print.  I filled the copier with paper before I started printing the materials and it holds 3000 sheets of paper at a time.  I refilled it yesterday.  That’s a lot of paper.

I’m headed to my daughter’s right after work tonight.  She and one of the twins (Z to be exact) have bronchitis.  Her husband has to work this weekend so I’m going to help her do whatever needs done.  I’m even taking dinner.

And Irish soda bread.  It’s only available around St. Patrick’s Day and I love this stuff.

I hope to have some time to knit so I’m taking a few things to work on while I’m there.

  1. The neckwarmer.  (See the last post.)  This has been slow going.  Of course, I have been pretty busy every evening this week: laundry, Zumba class, running errands, laundry again, packing.  So you can see I haven’t worked on it too much.
  2. A new sweater.  Tangerine Twist from Knitty Summer 2007.  I bought yarn last summer for a project that escapes me so I have enough yarn for this.  I think this shape will be much better for me than the papaya cardi fail.
  3. Mitts for me.  Treads, Jiffy Mitts, or Fetching using yarn from my stash with enough to make all three pair but I’m not going to cast on all of them.  Treads has a new stitch to learn.  (Thank you Cpeezers for this great tutorial on the lateral braid.) Jiffy Mitts uses fingering weight.  I’m still not over the two pairs of Music Mitts I just finished.   Fetching has cables which I’ve never done.  I’ve been knitting off and on since I was 10 years old and I’ve never done cables other than a swatch.
  4. Seamless slippers.  Pattern on the right.  Mindless knitting and one can never have too many seamless slippers.

Have a great weekend.
