A new pair

Last May 15th my sister-in-law slipped on her basement stairs and clunked down the three remaining steps on her left heel.  Her heel was shattered.  The surgery went well and the bone, with the help of plenty of titanium, healed.  Unfortunately, a sore and subsequent hole/wound from wearing a special boot did not close up.

I lost count of the various surgeries she’s undergone and had to wear a wound vac for several weeks. During this time, she was still teaching and wore the pair of slippers I knit for her to school as she needed to keep her foot covered and warm.

She was finally able to wear “regular” shoes sometime in January.

I received the following text from her Saturday evening:

And this is my progress.

I’m using a wool and hemp blend yarn that I picked up somewhere (no idea where)…

…and an acrylic yarn held together for the seamless slippers.

I should have them finished later today then I can sew on some soles, make pom poms and have them ready to mail by the weekend.

  1. what a horrible sounding thing to have happen! But so glad the slippers made it more bearable. You are a good woman to whip up another pair so quickly. What kind of sole do you put on them to prevent further slips?

    • The soles are from “replacement carpeting” for cars and trucks. I bought a roll of it specifically for this purpose from Wal-Mart when I used up the leftovers after putting in carpet in my husband’s truck several years ago. It’s like felt and easy to cut with regular scissors. I lost the label from the roll so I can’t tell you the brand. The Wal-Mart in my area doesn’t sell it any more. I did find something similar from Online Fabric Store. Here’s the link.

I used to take several layers of denim (from wore out jeans) and machine quilt soles before I found this stuff.

Maybe I should put some hot glue dots on the soles to make them less slippery. Fortunately she wasn’t wearing the slippers when she fell or I would have felt really bad.

      • I wondered if you were using those rubbery dot socks for soles or something. Replacement carpet for a vehicle sounds like it would be plenty sturdy! And I am glad she wasn’t wearing your slippers when she fell, too. That WOULD have made you feel badly.

  2. Wow, sorry to hear of her struggles. So wonderful she has you to cover her feet! My BIL wears through his handmade slippers, I just finished his 4th pair! That’s why I asked about the soles you put on. Even though the slippers are already felted, he still wears them out! :O
