Music to my eyes

I saw these on someone’s post the other day and I want to knit them.  Mr. Aitch was a band director and music teacher for long enough to retire from teaching with full benefits.

Longer than you would want to listen to beginner band students try to make a pleasant sound from a musical instrument.

Add ten more years.

And another ten years.

And ten more.

And a few more years.

Understand why he doesn’t want to hear me practice my bagpipes?

Anyway during his retirement, he decided to pick up a few “hobbies”.  One being smoking cigars.  Now he doesn’t smoke them in the house (end of a long marriage) but he does smoke them outside even in the winter.  I saw these cigar gloves on Knitty and these fingerless mitts and decided I. Had. To. Frankenknit**. Them. For. Him.  Maybe in time for Christmas.  Yeah, Christmas 2010.

The thing is:

  1. I don’t have any solid sock or DK yarn in my stash.
  2. I’m going to Philadelphia for a conference this week.
  3. There are a few lovely yarn shops a few blocks from my conference.
  4. I don’t have any solid sock or DK yarn in my stash.
  5. I can load up on snacks during the breaks so I don’t have to eat lunch or dinner.
  6. I may come home with some solid sock/DK yarn.
  7. I’m thinking  maybe a deep heathery blue or grey and black instead of white and black.  Something subtle but with enough contrast to see the design.  You know, something a man wouldn’t be embarrassed to wear even if it is only in the garage.

Update to follow.

BTW you don’t work with me, do you?

**Frankenknit – adapting two or more patterns into something that works for you.   Frankenstein = Frankenknit

Decisions, decisions

I picked up the Ms Ida Chain Link mittens once again and am already a few rows past the ribbing.  I still haven’t completely finished the first one yet.  The thumb and flip-top finishing are waiting.  Plus I’m not liking the pointy end and tried to do something to round it out a bit and still keep the end smooth.

MS Ida CLM right back

I’m headed to the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia) in 10 days for a conference for work.  I don’t like to drive in big cities and I’d have to drive the beltway around Baltimore.  Mr. Aitch went with me the last time I went to this conference.  He doesn’t want to go this time.   So I decided I would take the train instead of drive.

That will give me six hours going and six hours coming back to knit!  Yes!  Plus the evenings in the hotel.  Yes!

I need to look at my unfinished objects, my yarn stash and my knitting wish list.  Then I just have to figure out what project(s) to take with me…

Neck wraps

I’m looking for a quick knit for a neck wrap.  It has to be secure around my neck and not tie.

I ride a motorcycle and this time of the year (as well as the spring) the mornings are a bit chilly.  I usually tie a bandana around my neck under my jacket…looks like a cowboy sort of.  I want something a bit more sophisticated than a bandana.  My Mom had a lot of beautiful scarves that I thought I could use for such an occasion (and keep her close to me) but the scarves are silky and like to move around too much.

Any sleek but warm suggestions?

FBS and soakers

Some progress on the EZ February Baby Sweater.

February Baby Sweater pistachio

I like the idea with this sweater but I’m not loving it…yet.  I’m not into lace-type knitting and I would call the Gull stitch lacy.  Give me stripes, Fairisle, knits and purls but not yarn overs, k2tog and ssk.

I intended to make several of these sweaters for new babies but I may have to rethink this.

On another note I did get one picture of the Curly Purly wool soakers I made for my twin granddaughters last year.

Curly Purly Soakers Coral Purple

I used Cleckheaton yarn from my stash.  These were great to knit and my daughter loves them.  I’ve knit more but I only have pictures of these.  Some were made with Cascade 220 and Kashmira.  I do need to make at least two more.

I will take my Ms Ida CLMittens with me to work as I might have a chance to figure out how to bind off in pattern so they look  good with a rounded tip instead of the pointy tip.  Pictures if I’m successful.
