Gift idea for mother-to-be

Looking for a useful but unique gift for a new mom or mother-to-be?  Make some burp cloths.

I made these a few weeks ago for Mr. Aitch’s niece who’s expecting her first baby in February.  I used a few different prints and coordianted them with the baby bedding.

The tutorial is on my tutorial page.  You can make two out of one  yard of flannel or get creative and use two ro more coordinating prints and solids.  My original ones were made out of leftover pieces of flannel as well as some cut up flannel sheets and even a few of Mr. Aitch’s too-small-but-still-good flannel shirts.  Just make sure you pre-shrink the flannel as it will shrink…A LOT!!  I can’t stress that enough.  Pre-shrink!!

Baggage handlers

Before I get into this post I wanted to tell you that I have done very little knitting since we got back from Vegas last week.  I’ve been sick.  Too sick to knit.  In fact I’ve been too sick to do much of anything.  Sunday’s post was written on early Saturday before the fever.  Yesterday’s post took way too long to get together.  I realized I should not have posted when I had a fever or I wouldn’t have entitled yesterday’s post “Airplane knitting” which was the very same title four posts ago.  Whatever.  The fever’s gone but the cough will linger.  It’s back to work tomorrow.  I think.

Anyway, let’s get back to the baggage handlers.  Do you think baggage handlers take good care of your luggage when they put it on and take it off the plane?  Well, you might think/wish/hope they do but if you’ve ever flown on a commercial airline then you know they don’t care about your luggage.

They don’t care if it’s new.

They don’t care if it’s cute.

They don’t care if it gets wet.

They don’t care if it lands on grease.

They especially don’t care if it’s clean.  Because it won’t be when you get it back.

This suitcase has flown three times.  You can barely see the greasy stains or the frayed edges in this photo due to the flash on my camera but trust me they’re all there.

Do you have any idea how many red suitcases there are?  A lot.

Do you know how many red suitcases with green frogs there are?  Not many.  In fact I didn’t see any.  Except for ours.

I made this the night before we left on our trip for two reasons.  One was to make it easier to find at baggage claim.  The other was to sort of protect it from getting any dirtier.

The top strap stayed in place with Velcro so it could easily be removed for access to the handles.

The bottom also had a detachable strap to run it under whatever that thing is.

There’s also a slit for the side handle that could have had a Velcro strap but I was running out of time.

Was this easy to find in baggage claim?  You betcha!  Didn’t see another one like it.

Post felting

I did it!  And I’m happy with the results.

The finished measurements are 10 1/2 inches tall and 13 1/4 inches wide.  It’s shown here stuffed with 2 bath towels and a hand towel.  The pile of fluff is what I had to shave off as it was a bit fuzzy.

I bought some leather straps but I don’t think they are quite right for this bag  so I’ve decided to knit some I-cord around a clothesline  as straps for strength and durability.  I’ll sew them on after they are felted.

The final decision I need to make is with the fabric for the lining.  Most of my bags have a dark interior and I feel like I’m looking into a black hole to find what I need.  I prefer a brighter lining.

I’d rather use a piece of fabric I already have rather than buy something new.

Option 1 is a scrap of cotton (less than 1/2 yard) from my mother-in-law’s stash.  There might be enough for pockets which I find are a necessity.  Of course the pocket could be made from another fabric or I could make a zippered pocket with a different lining as well.

Option 2 is a bright lime green silky-satiny fabric that matches the green squiggle on the front.  I have a yard which is more than enough for the lining and many pockets.

Do you have an opinion on the lining?

I still have to knit the straps so I have at least a day to decide.
