Christmas Wishes – 2012 edition

For the past several years I have done an Advent-type activity with my grown kids.  They both have families of their own so I’m focusing on the grandchildren this year.  Our grandson is seven and his sister is three.  The twins will be four in December.

In the past I would put a small gift in a brown paper lunch bag and close it with a numbered tag.  The bag would be opened on that particular day starting December 1 and ending on December 24.

Instead of using the lunch bags this year, I opted for “sour cream” packets.  They are so easy to make and can be adapted to any size needed.  Check out this tutorial from Splitcoaststampers

I used scrapbook paper (50% off with a coupon) from Joann’s.  Most of the packets I made were 4 x 6 inches to make better use of the 12 x 12 inch paper.  The longer packets were 6 x 8 inches and held a candy cane or two.  Round labels worked great for my number stickers.  Green numbers were for one child and red for the other.

I bought each family a small pre-lighted Christmas tree.  Each packet contains a sweet treat and a small ornament.  The kids can add an ornament to their tree each day.   I also included a star tree topper and child friendly Nativity set.

Do you have an Advent tradition?

Office mitts

The fingerless mitts I made for the office staff are finished and gifted.  The pattern was developed from a combination of a few glove, mitten, and fingerless mitt patterns I found so it’s more or less original.

The tan and olive green striped ones turned out better than I imagined.  I like how the stripes go from dark to light with the navy first then the dark heather green and finally to the olive.  Subtle but noticeable.

I think they all coordinate well with the hats I gifted last year.

Quiet time

This year is the second time Mr. Aitch and I will be spending Christmas Day with just the two of us.  The first time was in 2008.  We didn’t like it.  It was not fun.  And we promised each other that we would never do it again.

But we’re ok with it this year.

Our daughter and family are having Christmas at their own home and starting their own traditions.  We respect their decision as we did the same thing after our children were born.

Our son lives closer but with Mr. Aitch’s choir director obligations our Sunday “down time” doesn’t start until early afternoon.  Adding the fact that neither of us like to drive in the dark makes the day even shorter, literally.

We will be spending the day relaxing and enjoying our new traditional Christmas dinner: Prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, fresh-baked rolls, cheesecake and a bottle (or two) of fine wine.

We will visit our son on Monday when we will have more time.

I finished all the mitts for the office gifts except for weaving in the ends of the final one.  Those will be gifted on Tuesday.

Our daughter and family will visit us next weekend.

I hope your celebrations are what you want them to be.

Merry Christmas.

I think I’m safe

I’m pretty sure no one from work reads this blog so I think I’m safe sharing what I have done so far on my office Christmas knitting.

My plan was to knit mitts that coordinate with these hats that I made last year.

Office hats

I still have one navy mitt to knit then another pair to coordinate with the striped hat in the upper left.  I’m not sure how I want to do that final pair.  These are knit in the round so any colorwork will also go around.  Maybe bold stripes around the main hand part?

There are still ends to weave in but I’m making headway.
