Hiccups

Last evening after  work, I noticed that Mr. Aitch had the hiccups.  He told me that he had had them for about 20 hours and he had gotten about two hours sleep.  He was up most of the night unbeknownst to me.

As we were headed out to dinner, I told him I had a couple of hiccup remedies that work for me.

Now I don’t know how I stumbled upon these hiccup remedies as there are as many remedies for hiccups as there are drops of water in the streams, rivers, lakes, seas and oceans of the world.

The first remedy is to sit straight, shoulders back, and relax.  Now tense the stomach muscles as if doing a sit-up.  Continue to relax the shoulders and breathe normally but concentrate on keeping the stomach muscles tense.  Hold that tension for at least 2 minutes.  The diaphragm will relax and the hiccups will be gone.  No scare tactics, no drinking water upside-down, no spoonful of sugar, no peanut butter.  This can be done anywhere and alone or in a crowd.

Mr. Aitch tried it while we continued our conversation.  It worked.

The second remedy worked on my granddaughter.  Most four-year-olds don’t understand how to tense stomach muscles without holding their breath.  The is best done while lying down but can be done sitting.  The hiccupper lies down or sits relaxed.  Place your warm hand on the area approximately where the diaphragm is.  If sitting up, place your other hand on the back opposite where the hand is on the front.  This will help support and relax the hiccupper.  Apply gentle pressure but not too much.  Make sure the person continues to breathe normally.  The warmth of your hand and gentle pressure should calm the diaphragm.  This remedy takes a little longer but it does work.

Do you have any tried-and-true hiccup remedies?

Getting…

gloves

…a grip.  I have taken up quilting and am almost ready to machine quilt my first one.  Question for quilters: Do you wear special gloves to get a grip on your quilt as you maneuver it while machine quilting?

…older.  I had another birthday at the end of October.  Funny how they keep happening year after year after year.  I know age is just a number but I have a hard time telling people how old I am.*  My finite existence is starting to weigh on me.  I’m not as quick physically or mentally.  I forget things so I have to write everything down…that’s not really new but having to go back and refer to my notes is new.  Sleep issues have been a part of my life for 15 or so years.  Our new mattress has helped the past two weeks as I’m getting better sleep, just not enough.  Planning for the future is a real eye-opener.  We’ll need a new roof on our house in the next five or so years.  Do we look at the 20-25 year life shingles or go for the 50-70 year metal roof?  Is adding a craft room in the basement worth the time, effort and expense?  These are things I just don’t want to think about.

pizza

…a chance to goof off.  Last evening I allowed myself to goof off.  I brought home a pepperoni pizza for dinner.  That’s really a big thing for me as I’m not a much of a pizza fan but it was a quick no-brainer option and I actually had some cold paper cash with me.  After washing the dishes and reading a few emails (some I answered, some I did not), I fixed myself a pot of peppermint tea and started to read a book a friend sent me.  Thanks Leah!

*BTW  I’m fifty-eleven.  Ouch.  That hurt.  I need some ice…and an R&C.**

D is for dilemma

I was  going to post about the end of Daylight Savings Time in the United States but found the information confusing.  There were various reasons for DST ranging from energy savings to an increase of leisure evening activities as well as driving safety.  There are many more, too.

My confusion is that if we DST lasts for more than six months, why is Standard Time the standard?  In the U.S. DST begins the second weekend in March and lasts until the first weekend in November.

That’s eight months!

And confusing.

A is for apple…

I have had a craving for apples all week.  The apple I have at lunch just isn’t enough but since I buy only enough apples to get us through the week, I can’t have more than my allotment.  Says me.

apple

Mr. Aitch isn’t home this evening so instead of raiding the apple drawer in the refrigerator, I chowed down on peanuts after dinner.

I’m regretting that decision right now.

By the way……November is National Blog Post Month aka NaBloPoMo.  This means that bloggers are encouraged to post something every day for the month of November.  The post need not be long or prophetic.  It just needs to happen.

I’ve thought about it before but never committed.

I’m committed this year.  Well, I may be committed before the month is over.  =)
