Saving plants

Our weather has turned much cooler this week. In fact it’s supposed to get close to freezing tomorrow night.

Just to be on the safe side, I brought my outside plants in for the winter.

I’ve had that asparagus fern (in the middle) for at least 10 years. I repotted it this spring and left it outside all summer. It really flourished!

The coleus on the left has also been around for a few years. I was surprised that I could keep that planted alive that long. The bright green one was pinched off the one of the plants from the planter on the right and just stuck in the soil. It took root and seems to be quite happy.

The planter on the right was new this year. It’s getting tall but scrawny. I think I’ll need to cut some of those plants back and hope I don’t kill them.

They are sitting on the “formal” dining room table for now. If we get company this fall or winter, I’ll have to find another place for them so we can sit at that table instead of crowd around the small table in our kitchen.

I think I need a new garden flag as that one sticking in the planter is so faded. “It’s Always 5 O’clock Here”

Do you try to save plants from one year to the next or just leave them outside and let Mother Nature do her thing?

  1. I have a shamrock (oxalis something or other) that is older than my kids. It has been dumped and repotted with a prayer multiple times. I move it (and its children) and a poinsettia out to the balcony every late spring and they love it. Almost time to bring them in.

  2. My daughter gave me a braided hibiscus tree for Mother’s Day. As soon as it was in the 40’s I put it out on my little balcony and tided it to the railing so it wouldn’t fall over, because the wind wanted to knock it down. It thrived out there and I got a ton of flowers for a few months. It is not blooming as much with the weather getting colder and I’ll have to bring it back in on Sunday because Sunday night it will be in the mid 30’s. Sigh, now I will have to look and make sure I’m not bringing in any spiders, ugh. And try to figure out how to prune it back. LOL I live in a small two bedroom apt and a tree was not what I wanted in my house :P. Hope I don’t kill it over the winter. I will live with my other house plants by my sliding glass door so it gets some sun. I need to replant several of my smaller plants, guess in a few weeks will be as good a time as any.

    • Oh your braided hibiscus sounds lovely though I do understand your dilemma with having a tree inside if space is limited. The flowers are big and beautiful. I had a brilliant pink one for several years in my front flower bed. Alas, it eventually died.

      • the flowers on mine are yellow. I live in the midwest where it gets to -20’s and -30’s without the wind chill (up to -50 with wind chills from time to time) and it would not thrive outside here lol. It’s not a huge tree but still :P.

  3. I have plants that I try to overwinter. But with us going to Florida, that leaves my son to take care of them so it’s pretty iffy. My attitude it’s not the end of the world if they don’t survive. I have 2 jasmine plants and a hibiscus that I try to keep. I’ve also started some trees from seeds that I’m trying to let grow bigger before planting them. They sit in our breakfast room over the winter. I think I’m going to dump a lot of my planters this year as it’s just such a hassle to overwinter.
